The ditch and bank are governed by precise engineering standards to ensure equipment safety. Law 4.2 requires the ditch to be between 200mm and 380mm wide, with a depth between 50mm and 200mm. It must feature a "holding surface," such as sand or carpet, that prevents damage to the bowls or jack. Beyond the ditch, the bank must rise at least 230mm above the green’s surface (Law 4.3). Indoor facilities often utilize "portable" ditch systems or fixed wooden banks that must meet these same height and safety requirements. The face of the bank must be vertical or sloped at an angle no greater than 35 degrees and must be covered in a non-damaging material, ensuring that any "toucher" entering the ditch remains in play.
