The Lead’s primary responsibility is defined under Law 40.1.1, which mandates that they must place the mat and deliver the jack to start each end. They are also responsible for ensuring the jack is centred before the first bowl is delivered. Tactically, the Lead must be a specialist in the "draw" shot, as their goal is to build a solid foundation by placing bowls as close to the jack as possible. According to Law 6.1.1, they must ensure the mat is placed at least 2 metres from the rear ditch and 25 metres from the front ditch. A consistent Lead sets the tone for the entire team, providing the Skip with a favourable head to manage.
