The green is the foundational playing surface for the sport, meticulously maintained to ensure a level area for competition. According to Law 4.1, a standard green must measure between 31 metres and 40 metres in the direction of play. This space is divided into designated lanes known as rinks. Under Law 5.1.1, there are slight variations between environments: outdoor rinks must have a width between 4.3 metres and 5.8 metres, while indoor rinks have a slightly wider minimum requirement of 4.6 metres. These boundaries are clearly defined by white or brightly coloured pegs fixed to the bank at each corner. To maintain the health of outdoor turf, the direction of these rinks is often rotated between North-South and East-West layouts.
